Forging Champions is a new feature documentary that takes you inside the engine room of Australian sport. For over 40 years, the Australian Institute of Sport is where raw talent has been sharpened into world-class excellence. Through interviews with athletes, coaches and staff, we relive Australia’s defining sporting moments and uncover what drives sustained excellence.
Inside the engine room of Australian sport
For more than 40 years, the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra has turned young talent into world-class athletes. Forging Champions marks that legacy, pairing never-before-seen archival footage with interviews from some of the country’s best-known athletes, including Michael Clarke, Lauren Jackson, Andrew Bogut, Kieren Perkins, Rob de Castella, Louise Sauvage, Anna Meares, Liz Ellis and John Eales.
From campus life to Brisbane 2032
The film revisits defining moments in Australian sport through the people who lived them: what it was like to live and train on the AIS campus, the coaches and staff behind the scenes, and what drives sustained excellence. It closes by looking ahead to the institute’s next chapter, with major campus upgrades planned as Australia prepares for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Forging Champions premiered on Channel 9 and 9Now on 2 February 2026.
