From Cricket Creases to Fairway Dreams: Filming Gary Goodman’s Love For Golf

There’s something uniquely tranquil about the golf course at first light - the crisp air, dew-laden greens and that palpable sense of potential before the first tee shot ever flies. For many athletes, retirement from competitive sport can feel like a closing chapter. But for Gary Goodman, it became the opening shot of a very different kind of sporting story.

Our recent film project followed Gary as he discovered a new purpose and joy at the Royal Canberra Golf Club, a place where rich history and challenging design converge. What unfolded was not just a film about golf, but about reinvention, community, and the quiet poetry of a beautifully crafted golf course.

Royal Canberra: A Course Steeped in Legacy

In its earliest years, Royal Canberra’s home was along the banks of the Molonglo River at Acton, where the unpredictable waterline became a natural test of golf and strategy - an early reminder that the game at its best engages both nature and instinct. As Canberra transformed and Walter Burley Griffin’s vision for Lake Burley Griffin came into focus, the course moved in 1962 to its present site in Westbourne Woods - a spectacular arboreal landscape destined to become a defining characteristic of the layout.

What sets Royal Canberra apart is its seamless harmony between course design and natural environment. Nestled within the Westbourne Woods arboretum - a once struggling collection of native and exotic trees revived through symbiosis with the golf course - Royal Canberra’s fairways meander through rolling terrain and towering species drawn from around the world.
